WHY YOU SHOULD ADD CHIA SEEDS TO YOUR DIET

Hey munchkins! This will be quite a lengthy post but I highly recommend that you read it all, so get cosy and grab a glass, a mug or a plate of something.

I started using chia seeds when I started having smoothies. I saw it in so many smoothie bowl pictures and curious me just had to look it up. So I read on it and I was amazed at what such tiny seeds could do in one’s body. After that I completely forgot about it (Typical me) until I saw it in the supermarket and I just had to buy it. AND we lived happy ever after! lol! Honestly, I absolutely love chia seeds because my immunity system has not been the best in the recent past and I started on a path to change that, so any thing that i can incorporate in my diet (and is not harmful to me) to help me on that path is a win! and gets to go home with me.

Chia seeds were originally grown in Mexico and were highly valued for their medicinal properties and nutritional value. They were even used as a currency! Imagine that!Chia means “strength” in the Mayan language, and they were known as “runners food” because runners and warriors would use them as fuel while running long distances or during battle to give them high energy and endurance. They said just 1 spoonful of chia could sustain them for 24 hours.

The one I bought from the supermarket (Chia Organics) says that it is ideal for executives,children, pregnant women, health managers and those with compromised immunity. It also says that you should add 2 spoons of chia seeds to tea, water, porridge, juice, cereal, yogurt or your favorite drink or meal. I use them in water, bread, cereal, yogurt,soups,smoothies and in ribena in my big beer mug. As you will see in the photos below. You can use them in a variety of food too that I haven’t mentioned, from rice dishes, baked goods and even vegetables. I think chia is a super-food that is quite easy to incorporate in your diet, so why not?

Let’s get to the ‘why you you should have chia seeds’:

  1. NUMEROUS NUTRIENTS

  2. ANTIOXIDANTS
    chia seeds are also heavily loaded with disease-fighting antioxidants, those compounds that roam the body looking for cell-damaging free radicals to knock out. Of course, no antioxidant can eliminate all free radicals, but in trying to do so, antioxidants are thought to also help reduce the risk for a number of chronic diseases. Since intense exercise can accelerate the production of free radicals, upping your intake of antioxidant-rich edibles like chia could theoretically improve recovery for better fitness gains.
  3. OH-MEGA GOODNESS
    Chia seeds are packed with omega-3 fatty acids, with nearly five grams in a one-ounce serving. These fats are important for brain health.
  4. FIBRE
    Adding some chia to your diet is an easy way to make sure you’re getting a good amount of fibre, which is important for digestive health.
    Just a tablespoon serving delivers about 5 grams, which can be significant for the many people who struggle to reach their daily quota of 38 grams for men and 25 grams for women.
  5. HIGH PROTEIN
    Chia seeds also make a great source of protein for vegetarians and don’t have any cholesterol. One 28-gram serving of these super seeds has 4.4 grams of protein, nearly 10 per cent of the daily value.
  6. SATIETY
    Chia seeds expand to as much as 10 times their size when in liquid, helping you feel full and reducing your appetite
  7. LOWERS RISK OF HEART DISEASE AND TYPE 2 DIABETES
    Chia seeds may also increase healthy cholesterol while lowering total, LDL, and triglyceride cholesterol which is good for the heart.
    Chia seeds have been shown to improve blood  pressure in diabetics and is being studied as a potential natural treatment for type-2 diabetes because of its ability to slow down digestion. The gelatinous coating chia seeds develops when exposed to liquids-can also prevent blood sugar spikes.
